Slow Travel Spain > Where to Stay in Elche
The City of 200,000 Palms
Elche is often forgotten destination, as it is not next to sea, as its neighboring city Alicante.
But to stay in Elche is to sleep inside a prehistoric forest of over 200,000 palm trees.
A UNESCO World Heritage site where the air is cooler, the light filters through fronds, and the rhythm of life moves slower than the coastal resorts just 20 minutes away.
Read our full Elche Travel Guide for things to do, restaurants, and mindful activities.
Whether you need a practical stopover near the airport or a slow weekend escapein Costa Blanca, this guide will help you find the most peaceful corners of this extraordinary city.
From a botanical garden hotel to a sustainable boutique retreat, these are the stays that embody mindful travel.
Short on time?
Here are the best hotels in Elche at a glance.
| Hotel | Vibe | Check Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel Huerto del Cura | 🌿 Ultimate Oasis | View on Booking → |
| Hort de Nal | 🌱 Sustainable Sanctuary | View on Booking → |
| Hotel Elche Centro (Meliá) | 🏙️ City Center Classic | View on Booking → |
| Hotel Port Elche | ✈️ Airport Business Choice | View on Booking → |
| Hotel Areca | 🧘 Airport Spa Retreat | View on Booking → |
Elche is physically split into distinct areas, each offering a completely different energy. Choosing where to stay depends on what you seek.
The historic heart of Elche is where the magic happens. Narrow streets, centuries-old buildings, and the famous Palmeral – a vast palm grove that has been cultivated since the Moorish era.
Here, you are within walking distance of the Basilica of Santa María, the Municipal Park, and the Huerto del Cura gardens.
The vibe: Cultural, calm, deeply Spanish. You wake up to church bells and the rustle of palm fronds. It is the soul of Elche.
Best for: Slow travelers, culture enthusiasts, and anyone seeking an authentic escape. Walk everywhere. Let the city reveal itself to you.
Where to stay: Hotel Huerto del Cura, Hort de Nal, Hotel Elche Centro

Torrellano / Airport Zone – Near the Alicante-Elche Airport
Just a few minutes from Alicante-Elche Airport, this area is ideal for early flights or late arrivals. It is practical, convenient, and efficient – but you lose the soul of the city here.
The vibe: Functional, quiet suburban, no-fuss. You are close to the runway and the motorway.
Best for: Layovers, business travelers, and those who need to be at the airport quickly.
Where to stay: Hotel Areca.
A slow travel tip: Instead of rushing to the airport hotel, consider staying in Arenals del Sol. It is a small beach destination close to the airport. With a taxi, you are here in 5 minutes from the airport so it is convenient even for a short stay.
Elche actually has a coastline stretching 12 kilometers, south from Alicante. About 15 minutes from the city centre, the districts of La Marina and Arenales del Sol offer wild, quiet beaches that are a world away from the crowded resorts of Benidorm.
This is not a built-up tourist strip. These are natural, windswept beaches with golden sands and clear waters. La Marina and Les Pesqueres have even earned Blue Flag status for their cleanliness and environmental management.
The vibe: Sandy, windswept, quiet. Sunsets here are extraordinary.
Best for: Beach lovers who want peace and solitude. A slower, more natural coastal experience.
A note on where to stay:
If your heart is set on waking up to the sound of the sea, you will find beachfront apartments and small boutique stays in the area. However, there are no major hotels directly on the beach here.
Note: All the hotels are handpicked by Sini Hietaharju, and the most useful information of each hotel is combined with AI's ability to scrape lot of information from multiple sources, and Sini's editing to fact-check all of it.
Most of these hotels I have visited myself.
If you stay in Elche, stay here.
Hotel Huerto del Cura is not just a hotel. It is a living botanical garden. Bungalows are set directly inside one of Europe's most spectacular palm groves.
The hotel occupies 3,000 square metres of lush tropical gardens. You wake up to sunlight filtering through fronds, the sound of fountains, and the scent of orange blossom.
There is an outdoor pool with a poolside bar, a restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine, and the Zen Oasis spa.
The mindful details: The hotel recently partnered with renowned skincare brand Germaine de Capuccini to revitalise its Zen Oasis massage centre. The new massage menu includes aromatherapy relaxation massage, anti-ageing facial treatments, sports massage, and a Zen Ritual for Couples – all using high-quality products. The Imperial Palm – a rare 185-year-old palm with a candelabra-like branching structure – stands in the garden. Sit beneath it. Let its age remind you that some things cannot be rushed.
Best for: Slow travelers, couples, and anyone who wants to sleep inside a botanical garden.
Slow living signature: Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the palms. The air is cool, the bread is fresh, and the only sound is birdsong.
This is the vibe you sign up for.
For travelers who want luxury with a conscience, Hort de Nal is a revelation.
This 100% sustainable, plastic-free boutique hotel is integrated into a 30,000 square metre historic palm grove – a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The architecture is minimalist – clean lines, natural materials, and a deep respect for the surrounding landscape.
The mindful details: The hotel has only eight adult-only guestrooms, each warm and welcoming with glamorous touches and luxurious materials. Some rooms have terraces overlooking the pool and the palms. The hotel offers an extensive list of massages, and you can book a personal trainer, physiotherapist, or nutrition expert for a full wellness experience.
Best for: Eco-conscious travelers, couples, and those who value design and sustainability.
For those who want to be in the heart of the city, Hotel Elche Centro offers comfort, convenience, and a touch of elegance. It sits on a central street, just a short walk from the Basilica and the Vinalopó river walk.
This is a great, central basic hotel, part of Melía hotels, which is my go-to hotel chain.
The mindful details: The rooms are modern and comfortable, with soundproofing that creates a quiet retreat in the middle of the city. The rooftop terrace offers views over the city and the distant palms.
Best for: City explorers, couples, and those who want easy access to all of Elche's sights.
If your priority is convenience to Alicante Airport or you're traveling for business, Hotel Port Elche is an excellent choice. Located in the Elche Parque Industrial zone, it's a modern, soundproofed hotel offering practicality without sacrificing comfort.
The mindful details: The hotel features an outdoor pool, a fitness centre, a sauna, and an on-site restaurant. It's fully soundproofed, ensuring a restful night's sleep before or after a flight. Free Wi-Fi and parking add to the convenience.
Best for: Airport stopovers, business travelers, and those who prefer a modern, functional stay over a historic city-center experience.
Slow living signature: A quiet evening swim in the outdoor pool after a day of travel
.
Insider tip: The hotel offers a direct bus connection to Elche city center and Alicante, making it easy to explore without a car.
If you must stay near the airport, Hotel Areca is another mindful choice. It is modern, comfortable, and offers a spa with an indoor pool, sauna, and Turkish bath.
The mindful details: The spa is the highlight – perfect for relaxing before or after a flight. The rooms are soundproofed and comfortable, with everything you need for a restful stopover.
Best for: Early flights, late arrivals, and travelers who want spa access before a journey.
Once you've found your hotel, explore the best things to do in Elche in our complete city guide.
One day in Elche can be a transformative experience – if you let yourself slow down.
Morning: Municipal Park & Fountains
Start your day at the Municipal Park just after sunrise. The neo-Arabic fountains catch the first light. Bring a journal, sit on the bench by the pond, and write for 15 minutes. The only sound is water.
Midday: Vinalopó Riverbed Walk
Walk the Vinalopó riverbed – a massive urban art project and exercise path that cuts through the city. It is a strange, beautiful, concrete silence. The path is lined with sculptures, fountains, and quiet corners.
Afternoon: Huerto del Cura Gardens
Visit the Huerto del Cura gardens when the sun is high. The light filters through the palms and creates patterns on the ground. Walk slowly. Sit beneath the Imperial Palm. Let its age remind you that some things cannot be rushed.
Evening: Basilica of Santa María
End your day at the Basilica of Santa María. Step inside just before dusk. The stillness is profound. If you are lucky, you might hear the choir or organ practice.
