A Green Oasis in the Heart of Costa Blanca

Elche is not that known destination as it's coastal neighbor Alicante.

Yet Elche has an awesome Palm tree forest and authentic Spanish city vibe worth discovering.

There are also multiple lovely hiking routes around Elche, including waterfalls.

A UNESCO World Heritage site with over 200,000 palm trees, yet quietly overlooked by most travelers heading to the coast.

A place where ancient irrigation systems still water the soil, where a medieval mystery play has been performed for centuries.

In this guide, I'll share the best things to do in Elche, where to eat, where to find wellness, and how to experience the city's unique slow-living culture.

If you're looking for a more detailed breakdown of hotels and neighborhoods, check out our full Where to Stay in Elche guide.

Let's step into the palm grove.

Why Visit Elche

Elche is one of Spain's most underrated destinations. While the coastal resorts of Benidorm and Alicante attract crowds, Elche remains a sanctuary of calm:a place to breathe, to walk, to simply be.

Here's what makes it special:

  • Europe's largest palm forest – over 200,000 trees, UNESCO-protected since 2000

  • Three UNESCO treasuresthe Palmeral, the Misteri d'Elx, and the Museo Escolar de Puçol

  • Authentic Spanish culture – far from the tourist crowds, with local markets, family-run restaurants, and a deep sense of tradition

  • A slow travel haven – flat, walkable, and deeply peaceful

Elche is not a city to be conquered. It is a city to be felt.

Where to Stay in Elche – Top 4 Hotels

Elche offers three distinct accommodation experiences, depending on what you're looking for.

Elche Centro (The Palm Grove) – The heart of the city. Stay here to be surrounded by the UNESCO-protected Palmeral, within walking distance of the Basilica, Municipal Park, and Huerto del Cura gardens. Perfect for slow travelers and culture lovers.

The city's best hotels are nestled within the UNESCO-protected palm grove. For a sustainable, design-forward experience, Hort de Nal offers a 100% eco-friendly retreat in a historic orchard.

Where to stay: Hotel Huerto del Cura, Hort de Nal, Hotel Elche Centro

My personal recommendation would be to choose Hotel Huerto del Cura

The hotel is in central location and the atmospehre is relaxed palm tree garden with a pool. It's like an oasis.

This is the vibe in the Hotel Huerto del Cura garden

Torrellano / Airport Zone – Practical for early flights or late arrivals. Convenient and efficient—but you lose the soul of the city here. Best for layovers and business travelers.

If you are catching an early flight, Torrellano has practical options, including the spa Hotel Areca.

The Coast (La Marina / Arenales) – Wild, quiet beaches about 15 minutes from the city. Sandy, windswept, and uncrowded. Best for beach lovers who want peace and solitude.

13 Things to Do in Elche – A Mindful Itinerary

1. Explore the Palmeral (Palm Grove)

Walk through Europe's largest palm forest – over 300,000 palm trees covering a large part of the city and its countryside. UNESCO-protected since 2000. The ancient irrigation system, introduced by the Romans and perfected by the Moors, is still visible. Free entry. The Palm Museum offers visitors the chance to learn about the history of this extraordinary grove.

2. Visit the Basilica of Santa María

A stunning Baroque church with a Gothic facade. Home to the Misteri d'Elx – a UNESCO-protected medieval mystery play performed entirely in song every August.

3. Wander the Municipal Park

Neo-Arabic fountains, ponds, and shaded benches. The best place for morning journaling.

4. Walk the Vinalopó Riverbed

A massive urban art project and exercise path that cuts through the city. Strange, beautiful, and quiet.

5. See the Imperial Palm at Huerto del Cura

A rare 185-year-old palm with a candelabra-like branching structure. One of the most photographed trees in Spain.

6. Discover the Misteri d'Elx Museum

Learn about the city's UNESCO-protected mystery play – a medieval drama performed entirely in song.

7. Visit the Altamira Castle

Built by the Almohads between the 12th and 13th centuries. The fortress, also known as the Alcázar de la Señoría, has been renovated and today houses the Archaeological and History Museum (MAHE).

8. Explore the Elche Reservoir and Waterfall (Presa del Pantà d'Elx)

A spectacular 17th-century arch-shaped gravity dam built on the Vinalopó river between the Elche mountains and the Castellar hill.

One of the oldest functioning dams in Europe, this is a stunning spot for hiking and nature immersion. The trail takes you along the river and wetlands to the dam, passing a beautiful waterfall along the way.

The walk is mostly easy on dirt footpaths, with some steep steps, and takes about 20-30 minutes each way from the car park to the foot of the dam. Perfect for a slow morning surrounded by the sounds of water and birds.

9. Visit El Cau – An Open-Air Sculpture Museum

Hidden in the mountains of Elche, El Cau (meaning "The Burrow") is a fascinating open-air museum where over 100 sculptures are carved directly into the sandstone rock of an old quarry. Created by artist Mariano Ros and his friends, the carvings depict scenes and symbols related to Elche. The hike to reach it is challenging but rewarding, with stunning views over the city and mountains. A truly unique and mindful experience for art and nature lovers.

10. Take a Day Trip to La Marina Beach

Wild, quiet, and uncrowded. 15 minutes from the city. Surrounded by pine forests and offering golden sands and clear waters. A natural extension of Elche's peaceful character.

11. Visit the Salinas Natural Park and Santa Pola Salt Flats

Protected wetlands of great ecological value near Elche. Perfect for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

12. Take a Day Trip to Alicante

Just 25-30 minutes from Elche by car or bus, Alicante makes for an easy and rewarding day trip. Explore the iconic Castillo de Santa Bárbara, stroll along the Explanada promenade, relax at Postiguet Beach, and discover the charm of the Barrio de Santa Cruz old town.

13. Visit a Local Winery – Bodegas Faelo

For a taste of the local terroir, visit Bodegas Faelo, a charming family-run winery just outside Elche with a winemaking tradition spanning four generations. They produce around 10,000 litres of wine a year – rosé, red, white, and sweet. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the winery, including the family museum, the old wine press, vineyards, fermentation room, and barrel room. A wonderful way to spend a slow afternoon.

11 BEST RESTAURANTS

One of only two new restaurants in Spain to receive the prestigious Tres Soles (Three Suns) Guía Repsol 2025 award. A modern "casa de comidas" elevating traditional Spanish cuisine to an art form. The ultimate fine dining experience in Elche. (Not located in centre, grab a taxi)

  • SAÓ Restaurant Elx
This is a true gem for vegetarian food lovers. They focus on preparing vegetarian and vegan dishes with care, using fresh, seasonal products. The food is flavorful and refined, perfect for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

A fantastic spot for healthy, homemade dishes. They offer a variety of options suitable for vegans and those with gluten-free needs. Their menu features innovative poke-style bowls, hearty burgers, and unique offerings like kombucha made in Granada.

MINDFUL ONE DAY ITINERARY TO ELCHE

One day in Elche can be a transformative experience – if you let yourself slow down.

Morning: Municipal Park & Fountains

Start your day at the Municipal Park just after sunrise. The neo-Arabic fountains catch the first light. Bring a journal, sit on the bench by the pond, and write for 15 minutes. The only sound is water.

Midday: Vinalopó Riverbed Walk

Walk the Vinalopó riverbed – a massive urban art project and exercise path that cuts through the city. It is a strange, beautiful, concrete silence. The path is lined with sculptures, fountains, and quiet corners.

Afternoon: Huerto del Cura Gardens

Visit the Huerto del Cura gardens when the sun is high. The light filters through the palms and creates patterns on the ground. Walk slowly. Sit beneath the Imperial Palm. Let its age remind you that some things cannot be rushed.

Evening: Basilica of Santa María

End your day at the Basilica of Santa María. Step inside just before dusk. The stillness is profound. If you are lucky, you might hear the choir or organ practice.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TRAVELING TO ELCHE

How far is Elche from Alicante Airport?

Elche is 15-20 minutes from Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC). The C6 bus runs regularly, or you can take a train from the airport to Elche. For a slower, more sustainable arrival, choose the train – it is quieter, easier, and gives you a glimpse of the landscape.

Is Elche a beach town?

No. The city is inland, surrounded by palm groves. However, the coastline (La Marina and Arenales del Sol) is about 15 minutes away by car. These beaches are wild, quiet, and uncrowded – a natural extension of Elche's peaceful character.

Where should I park in Elche?

Central Elche is very walkable. If you are driving, Hotel Huerto del Cura offers on-site parking and is the easiest option for road trippers. For other central hotels, there are public car parks nearby, but ask your hotel for specific advice.

Is Elche walkable?

Yes. The city center is compact and pedestrian-friendly. You can walk between the Basilica, the Municipal Park, the Huerto del Cura gardens, and the Vinalopó river path without needing a car.

What is the best time of year to visit?

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer is hot – but the palm groves provide natural shade. Winter is quiet and peaceful, with a different kind of beauty.

Is Elche good for a slow travel escape?

Absolutely. The pace of life here is slower than the coastal resorts. The palm groves invite stillness. The city is safe, walkable, and deeply authentic. Elche is the ultimate "green lung" – a place to breathe.

What is the local food specialty in Elche?

Elche is famous for its rice dishes, especially arroz con costra – a local specialty. The region is also known for fresh seafood, olive oil, and the traditional turrón (nougat).
