Slow travel as "the How"

When I told my cousin about founding a blog called Slowtravelrepeat, it first made her think about traveling by train.

So she regarded slow travel more as a means of transportation and pace of traveling.

As it's anno domini 2026, I of course asked about the definition of slow travel also from AI.

The answer was indeed the same as my cousin would define it, and as Tourism research defines it:

Slow travel is understood mostly as a method or pace.

It's about the tangible choices made during travels, to go, literally, slower.

Slower pace means staying longer in a destination, instead of a short getaway, as well as enjoying the slow travel moments instead of rushing through a bucketlist itinerary.

In the minds of many, slow travel refers to slowers means of transportation. This can mean going by train or car instead of flying, or enjoying the slowness of exploring on foot.

Slow travel is often understood as a more local and authentic way of traveling, which tends to happen more naturally when you slow down the pace.

How does mindful travel differ from this, then?

Mindful travel as "the Why"

I've always considered myself a rather mindful traveler. So le'ts dig in what the h*ll that random phrase means.

When talking about mindful traveling, people think about meditating on a remote island, or being very conscious of the possible negative effects of traveling to rural areas, or Global South.

But mindful traveling is not only about responsible traveling, or ethics.

Mindful travel is about the state of mind when traveling.

It's about traveling intentionally, which can mean, for example, choosing just a few interesting sights to see, instead of doing multiple recommended activities in a destination.

It's about immersing into the new surroundings with all 5 senses, utilizing the basics of mindfulness. This consciousness and awareness is at the core of defining mindful travel.

Disconnecting from the phone and simply observing the moment right here, right now, instead of planning a day full of activities is mindful travel, which allows to connect deeper to your surroundings, people, and to yourself.

slow travel vs mindful travel

What is the key difference of slow travel and mindful travel?

Simply put, slow travel is the pace, while mindful travel is the way of being during the travel.

The terms are closely related, and works best combined, but this will help you to understand the main difference:

Slow traveller can be a person on an Interrail trip; They are traveling slowly. But without mindful travel, they may still simply fill the days with "best things to do in Paris in 3 hours" and constantly posting and browsing social media on the go.

On the other hand, mindful traveler can be a person taking a last minute flights to a destination for a lengthened weekend. So the pace is not slow, but they can immerse into cultural experiences, offline life and mindful activities, like yoga, reading, mindfulness walks and talking with locals.

Personally, I think the ideal way of traveling is to combine slow travel and mindful travel. And that's the kind of travel I want to inspire others to do as well with this Slowtravelrepeat website.

The combination of mindful slow travel

My personal take on these two terms is to combine them as much as possible, and they also complement each other; slowing the pace allows you to see more details, while mindful traveling will slow down the pace.

For me slow travel is not always about taking the slowest transportation, or discovering only nearby destinations.

Personally I try to stay longer in destinations. In practice, this means, for example, flying to South East Asia from Europe only when I can spend a minimum of two months there.

I know this is not possible for everyone, and that is ok.

I am not here to judge the travel choices and opportunities of different life situations.

I'm here to inspire to find more mindful ways to discover this beautiful earth, different cultures, and at the same time the similarities and connection of all people on this random third rock from the sun.

After all, traveling should be inspiring and rejuvenating, and the kind of experience that nurtures you.
