Fake life and boring perfection of Travel Instagram

I'm quite actively updating images to Instagram, but compared to that, I actually don't browse Instagram that much.

Anyhow tonight I couldn't sleep so I just browsed Instagram.

After a little while of inspiration, I came again to the same conclusion as before: browsing Instagram just makes me feel uneasy and bored with the perfection.

And the reason is not that the content I see would be somehow bad or meaningless, it's more other way around: all accounts are so perfect that I just can't recognize them from each other.

After a while, they start to seem identical and inspiration and ”wow” -effect becomes to ”oh, Petra city in Jordan again, just a girl with different-colored dress than last picture”.

I definitely did not find stuff like parasite travel experiences, stories about reverse culture shock or homesickness when living abroad.

Content

Is this all about jealousy?

First I was just inspired and I was just amazed how awesome pictures and concepts people can create with awesome locations, right lightning and ideal clothing and accessories.

Secondly the jealousy part kicked in where I was just jealous how they have pulled it off and managed to gather so big audiences for their pictures that they can live off it and I haven't.

Well, it makes sense of course if they're almost full-time working on it, they have professional pictures and they actively engage with their audiences and have clear focus with their profiles.

And I'm just publishing my own amateur, wannabe professional travel blogger pictures.

But then I started thinking that would I create similar content if I could?

First answer: heck yeah!

Calculated reality

I used to write for fun every now and then before I started this blog.

But with the blog,I feel like I've mainly produced some superficial text, thinking first what would look good and what would be worth writing and then starting.

Before I used to write whenever and whatever I felt like.

Of course it's partially conscious choice as well:

I don't want to share everything personal and I don't want to insult people. Because my sarcasm and black humour can sometimes be over the limits.

But I feel like I have lost that once I started publishing my texts. The process of coming up with content is different because I'm all the time aware that it's going to be public.

Picture-perfect Instagram

Also nowadays Instagram is more of a perfect life diary and all the fun and sarcasm is just something that wouldn't look good in visual app.

It's ridiculous problem, I know. Maybe I should just start satiric Instagram profile.

But instead, I’ve been doing the same as everyone else. Telling that everything’s okay and sharing only the coolest parts of my life on Instagram or blog. From these platforms everyone would definitely think everything’s more than fine.

And yeah it’s kinda true, I don’t need to worry so much anymore, but the beginning of 2018 sucked.

This post won’t be too much of a feeling vomit, but I just started feeling so itchy about everything in social media, in my lifestyle blog and basically in all public platforms online.

travel instagram boring jealousy

What’s the point of online travel contents?

Although the beginning of the year 2018 actually sucked big time, I have anyhow been actively photographing and updating my Instagram. I guess nowadays it’s ok to call it even a hobby.

Sometimes I just feel this ugly, fake feeling when I’m just updating nice pictures there, “acting” like everything’s perfect.

Although I don’t think that app has or needs to do much with reality. It’s a visual storytelling and sharing what pleases your eye in your life.

But sometimes it just feels a bit like, why am I even trying to share any words with these pictures when they’re there for the visuality.

That’s why I don’t always write in my blog either something stupid next to pictures.

Like, “this was taken just before I ate ice cream.”

I don’t know, maybe I’m too cynical as a travel content creator, but I find all those diary kinds of posts uninteresting.

If I browse other travel IG profiles, I quite often just look at the pictures and skip the paragraphs of text.

If I want to read, I want to read opinions or something more interesting and thoughtful, not just some words telling what I could immediately see by myself from the picture.

travel instagram is fake and boring

How should a travel Instagram look like?

But everyone has own style of creating any kind of content they like, I’m just still confused by all social media content actually.

My own style as an Instagrammer varies as well: some posts are these diary texts, some have “tourist guide approach” and some are just these contemplating texts How to Stay Sane When Travelling Full-Time.

I don't have any clear theme in my texts and I don't think it's needed anyway. It's just a hobby. There's no way of saying what content is good and what is bad; everything's subjective anyway. Anyhow I've been struggling indeed to decide what kind of content I want to share.

Are you creator or are the posts created by money

Maybe one of the biggest problems is that the most famous profiles often are (obviously) made to convert, bring profit.

That easily makes the content itself uninteresting, commercialized and fake.

Paid partnerships require telling about their products and services.

I mean how authentically or not commercialized you can tell about facial lotion or hotel collaboration anyway?

Maybe I’m just old-fashioned when I’m used to reading either newspapers, schoolbooks, novels or if diary, only my own.

I guess I’m also too manly, when I really don’t care reading someone’s review or personal experience before purchasing new facial lotion - at least if they have tried it only for few days for Instagram collaboration. I would rahter google reviews andsearch info from blogs.

I guess there's nothing wrong with posting only money-driven content, but it's good to be aware of that.

Trending way of saying this is: does this bring value to customer?

Does your text actually add something beneficial for the reader if you're trying to convert them or are you just sharing your experience and hoping to get money?

Majority of the travel creators' target audience is not even the target audience

Maybe this is jealousy talking, so take this with a pinch of salt. But another thing that bothers me about these fancy, luxury travel accounts is that most of their followers could never afford to go to the destination they promote. Or at least not for 2 weeks all inclusive in those 5-star resorts.

So I just find it a bit weird. And the real way they make money from their followers is by selling them online course how to become travel creator.

How you can stay free in luxurious hotels too! Sounds familiar from IG adds?

I guess nothing wrong with that, capitalist world is free world to sell and buy whatever you like.

I just think it's a bit misleading. Personally I think it's much better to learn skills that you can do anywhere in the world and then monetize on that.

And showing off your holidays is not really a skill yet.

Creat quality content is a skill though, that I admit.

I just wouldn't want people to think that just starting to share random pics daily from your previous holidays will make you rich and land free hotel stays into your inbox.

Stand behind your words

Some people create to instagram for fun and some do it for money.

As I mentioned earlier, we all like different kinds of contents and see them subjectively.

We can't say what's good and what's bad ig content since we all like different things.

Therefore it's all about everyone sharing what they can stand behind.

That they don't need to explain and take back their words if they get into sh*tstorm in social media.

It doesn't matter what it's for if you enjoy doing it.

Despite the provocative heading, have a great day, no matter if it's thoughtful, analytical, visual, sponsored or superficial, as long as you like what you're doing!
