  • Algarve - This region in southern Portugal is home to stunning beach resorts, golf courses and a laid-back lifestyle – perfect for a fun-filled, sun-filled surf and yoga holiday. • Lisbon - Portugal's historic capital is a unique and enchanting place to explore with cobblestone streets, old yellow trams and picturesque viewpoints. While you won't find many yoga retreats in the city of Lisbon itself, there are plenty of options nearby, including Sintra and Cascais just 30 minutes away, making it easy to combine a retreat with a Lisbon vacation.

  • Cascais - A charming seaside resort town just outside Lisbon, offering interesting architecture, a fortress, marina, beaches, surfing and galleries.

Tips for a yoga holiday in Portugal

Once you've found your perfect Portuguese yoga retreat, it's time to start planning your trip. Let's take a look at when to visit, how to get there, and what to bring to make the most of your experience.

Best time to travel to Portugal

Portugal is a lovely destination for a yoga retreat all year round, but the best time to travel depends a bit on what kind of weather and atmosphere you want from your vacation. For Finnish women who may be craving warmth after the cool weather in Finland, two times in particular stand out:

Spring (April-June)

This time is ideal in many ways. The weather is pleasantly warm, sunny, but not yet too hot, which makes outdoor yoga practice enjoyable. Nature is at its greenest and flowers are blooming, creating a peaceful and beautiful environment for the retreat.

The days are long, so there is plenty of time to do other activities on the retreat and explore the surroundings.

The tourist season is not yet at its peak, so you can enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere.

Autumn (September-October)

Autumn is another great option. The hottest summer heat is over, but the weather is still warm and sunny, often even warmer than the late summer in Finland.

The sea is warm for swimming if your retreat is located near the coast.

Rainfall usually starts to increase slightly towards the end of autumn, but September is often still very dry.

Tourist numbers are also down compared to summer, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

Summer (July-August)

Summer is the hottest and busiest tourist season in Portugal, especially in coastal areas like the Algarve.

If you like really warm weather and don't mind crowds, summer can be a good time. However, be prepared for higher prices and the fact that some activities can be more crowded. So I wouldn't recommend summer as a priority.

Winter (November-March)

Winter in Portugal is mild compared to Finnish winters, but the days are shorter and the weather can be more unstable, with rain and cooler days.

Although yoga retreats are also held in winter, outdoor activities may be more limited. However, this time can be a good option if you are looking for a particularly peaceful and affordable retreat.

Arriving in Portugal from Finland

Traveling to Portugal from Finland is relatively easy and hassle-free these days.

There are usually direct flights from Helsinki to at least Lisbon and sometimes also to Porto, especially during peak seasons. Direct flights are the most convenient and fastest option.

Alternatively, you can find cheaper flights with one or more stopovers. Common stopovers include other major European cities such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin or Paris. A flight with a stopover can increase the travel time, so take this into account when planning.
